While most boards will be concerned about the bottom line and a deficit in the budget, they will tend to give less attention to the income line. This is sometimes because they feel they have the power to cut expenses but feel less capable to increase donations. Many smaller nonprofits in financial trouble do not have a budget problem. They have a fundraising problem. Whether the board is a governing or managing board, they should examine the mix of fundraising tactics and analyze what is changing.
