Problem: Organizational leader is ineffectual

Sometimes, organizational leaders lose their edge. This might be because the organization has outgrown the ability of the leader. It could also be caused by problems at home or with health. If the organizational leader is no longer performing adequately for any reason, the board needs to step in. Managing boards can offer to assist with areas where the organizational leader is underperforming. Governing boards want to stay out of operations, so if the organizational leader is not performing, they will need to reassign or terminate the individual and select a new one. Navigating boards will be less concerned about the performance of the organizational leader and more concerned about making the changes needed for the survival of the organization or for moving out to new opportunities. Most likely, the current organizational leader won’t be a part of this new direction.
