Problem: Board is unsure about mandatory reporting

Often, the board does not know what reports need to be submitted annually to the federal, state, or provincial governments, as well as other health or accreditation agencies. They tend to rely on staff to stay current with those details. But these are the kind of details that, if missed, can shut down an organization. All boards should have a checklist of all reports that must be sent to governing bodies or accrediting agencies. These can be added to the board’s annual calendar or topics for board meetings. Board members cannot afford to be willfully ignorant of what is required by the government. The legal duty of obedience specifies that boards need to make sure that the organization is fulfilling all legal requirements and obeying all applicable laws.
