Most boards tend to ignore its own issues. As a board, they are focused on working on the organization and not on themselves. But no other group can work on the board or hold it responsible for improving its own processes. Every board needs to conduct a self-assessment at least once a year to evaluate how well it is performing. This can be done with a governance inventory or by an open and frank discussion about how the board is functioning together. It can be scheduled as part of an annual board retreat.
